When Lust tells Hawkeye this, Riza completely loses her cool demeanor that she so often wears. In one such battle, the Homunculus Lust appears to inflict a fatal wound on Mustang. Their protectiveness of the brothers often ropes them into high-stakes situations, including intense battles with supernatural beings. Upon arriving at the Elric brothers' home, the two officers discovered that the boys attempted (and failed) the taboo of human transmutation. Later in their military careers, Mustang and Hawkeye were sent to investigate a potential State Alchemist, Edward Elric. Hawkeye adopts a stern demeanor around Mustang, scolding him often and making sure he does his necessary paperwork. Hawkeye serves as Mustang's most trusted confidant, assistant, and even bodyguard.

However, later, after they've both been deployed from the battlefield, Hawkeye decides to join Mustang's team and serves as his bodyguard as well as assistant and trusted confidant. After the war, Riza, terrified of what they did, asks Roy to burn the tattoo off her back so that no one else could have access to her father's research and therefore the deadly damage that Flame Alchemy can do. During the Ishval Civil War, both Hawkeye and Mustang were outstanding, earning the names "The Hawk's Eye" and the "Flame Alchemist" respectively. A little afterwards, Riza also joined the military, following Roy and his naïve idealism. Roy gives Riza his number and Riza, impressed by Roy's dreams, shows him the research so he can leave and finally become a State Alchemist. After Berthold Hawkeye dies of an unknown illness, Roy and Riza visit his headstone. Afraid that his research would fall into wrong hands, Berthold Hawkeye tattooed his daughter's back with the secrets of flame alchemy. Prior to the events of Fullmetal Alchemist, Roy and Riza met as teenagers while Roy was learning alchemy from Riza's estranged father, Berthold Hawkeye.
